Custom Music

Q. What is custom music and how does it work?
A.  Custom music can be an arrangement of something already in existence or a new commissioned piece. It is composed specifically for your needs, instrumentation, playing ability and venue.

  • Arrangements of works in print or a song or melody you composed.

  • A new work for a special occasion - weddings, concerts, Christmas program - the possibilities are up to you!

Q. Do you only arrange music that is in public domain?
A.  Not necessarily. If you wish to have a piece arranged that is under copyright, please do the following:

  • Receive permission from the copyright owner for me to write an arrangement of the music for hire. That is, you are paying me to write the arrangement. Each copyright owner will have their own requirements and charges.

  • Upon receiving permission, forward me all paperwork so I can have it on file and can see the terms and conditions of the release.

  • This site, though it's for music educators, has good information about copyright laws. www.menc.org

Q. If I want an arrangement of a specific song or piece, what do I do?
A.  You must provide me a copy of the music if I don't have it. Also complete the Custom Music Request.

Q. Do I retain ownership of the piece that you arrange or compose?
A.  No. Brent Olstad Music retains all rights to the arrangement or composition. I will agree not to sell the piece to another party for a period of six months upon your receipt of the piece.

Q. Can I include the piece in a CD, video, etc.?
A.  Please contact me to discuss.

Q. How long will it take for you to complete the piece?
A. It depends on what you need. Typically, it will take 4-6 weeks to complete a solo piece with piano that is about 3-4 minutes long. Upon receipt of your your order, I will let you know the estimated completion date.

Q. How much do you charge?
A.  Again, this depends on what you need. Please contact me to discuss your needs or complete a request for a custom piece. A typical arrangement for solo instrument and piano that is about 3-4 minutes long will be $120. A commissioned, original work of the same instrumentation and length costs $300. A 20% non-refundable deposit is required when we agree upon the terms of the work for hire.

Q. What do I receive when I order a custom piece?
A.  You will receive all parts and a full score of the piece either by email or mail (for an additional fee) and a Finale generated sound file of the piece.

Q. Will I be able to make copies of the piece?
A.  You can make additional copies at no cost as long as the copies are for the group for which you originally purchased the piece.

Q. What if I'm not happy with the work?
A.  While this probably won't ever be an issue :), it's my commitment to make things right. Please contact me to discuss the project and I will make every effort to correct the piece to your satisfaction. If for some reason a reasonable outcome can't be found, I will refund your money, less the deposit.
